Jeff Gordon Win’s His Second Victory In 2011

When the dust settled it was Jeff Gordon who walked away with the checkered flag during yesterdays 5-Hour Energy 500.Gordon jokingly said in victory lane that it felt great to be part of the sport and that it also felt good to win as he’s creeping up on 40.

Denney Hamlin was favored to win the event, and lead for almost half of the race. Hamlin’s day took a turn for the worst when he came in to make a pit stop and took on a fresh set of tires. While leaving the pit stall he had a rear tire go down due to a valve stem that managed to work it’s way out of the rim. Hamlin had to make the long journey around the track and in the process tore the rear tire up on the rim which then managed to wrap itself around the rear axle housing ultimately tearing the rear brake line from the back of the caliper. Hamlin had what was shaping up to be a great day go from bad to worse by none other then just bad luck. It was really a weird set of circumstances.

Carl Edwards finished 140+ laps down due to dropping a valve into the cylinder. Jack Roush made the call to repair the 99 AFLAC machine of Edwards to make one final lap since Carl is the points leader.

Tony Stewart also had another tough day on the track, 3/4 of the way through the race he lost third gear from shifting the transmission on his machine too many times around the coarse. Nascar opened up the rules a little enabling the teams to run different transmission gears, that would allow the drivers to shift during the race if they wanted to. Typically in a cup race they leave the cars in high gear.
