9 Days of Body Work in 9 Minutes

For me, the most frustrating work that I have ever done is body work. It’s frightening. In fact, it is the single reason why I have owned my 1964 Impala project car for half of my life and never driven it… legally.  Replacing metal is very doable by nearly anybody with a welder, but making it look “right” takes real talent.  That said, I absolutely LOVE watching people that know what the heck they are doing, replace major body panels. That is why I watch all of those shows on the Speed & Discovery Channel. It is just so refreshing to see rusty or damaged metal removed and repaired with proper methods, and finished to look like new.

In the video above, you get to see 9 straight days of body work in 9 minutes.  They bring the damaged 2010 crew cab GMC truck into the shop, remove the interior, doors, fender, bed, and rocker panel.  They then straighten everything out, and reassemble it to look like new again. Oh, and they recorded it for our enjoyment.

We Found That Noise Under Your Jimmy.

The other night, I helped my friend swap out the two universal joints on the rear drive shaft of his 1986 GMC Jimmy (full size).  He said it was getting a little bit scary drive.  That means a lot coming from him because he has been known to blissfully drive vehicles that others fear to sit in, never mind take the helm of.  His last few jaunts to work and back were full of brain numbing vibrations that made the world around him appear to be a blur.

We removed the drive shaft after feeling the sloppiness in it, and we were both confident that there was going to be a serious lack of needle bearings inside.  We were not disappointed.  When we knocked the u-joint out of the yoke, there were no bearings left in one of the caps. Very niiiice. Where the bearings once lived, sat a pile of the finest metal dust that destruction can provide.  A few laughs were had, the new universal joints slid right in, and the big honkin’ GMC Jimmy lives again.

Chevy Truck Names: What the Heck Do They Mean?

Last Wednesday, we talked about Curb Weight, GVWR, GCWR, GAWR, payload capacity and how “tonnage” slang terminology is not reality.  Now, let’s put all of that great knowledge to use by deciphering the name’s of Ford, Chevy, and GMC trucks.  The automotive slang is in quotes for your reference.  To determine which truck you have, just look at the 5th digit of the VIN number.  This is the digit of the VIN that tells you the series of the vehicle.  For Chevy and GMC full size trucks built after 1980, it will be C, K, R or V.  Oooooh, a secret code? C-Series Truck = 2 Wheel Drive (1960-2002)

K-Series Truck = 4 Wheel Drive (1960-2000)

C10 = “½ Ton” 2wd (1960-1987)
C20 = “3/4 ton” 2wd (1960-1988)
C30 = “1 Ton” 2wd (1960-1988)

Colorado Speed Supercharged LS7 Drift Truck

The guys at Hitman Hotrods and MBRP Inc. are building what appears to be the most awesome Chevy Colorado known to mankind.   As if tubbing and caging a basically new 2007 Chevy Canyon wasn’t cool enough, they went ahead and stuck a supercharged LS7 in it, backed by a T-56 6-speed.  Drool. Multipurpose racing with 1000 horsepower is the intention, and they appear to be on the right track.  Let’s see how it performs on the 1AAuto Blog Pure Awesomeness list:
