  • Vehicle won’t start
  • Rough running engine
  • Lack of engine power

Causes of a Bad Fuel Pump

The fuel pump tends to fail on the 1st gen Tahoe, but occasionally the fuel filter can clog and cause similar symptoms.

How to Fix Fuel Pump Problems

The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. Replacing it requires removing the latches, disconnecting the fuel lines, and lowering the gas tank down. We recommend replacing the fuel filter at the same time as the fuel pump.

On the back of the intake there is a Schrader valve you can connect a fuel pressure gauge to test the fuel pressure.

Symptoms of Leaking Intake Gaskets

  • Intake gaskets leaking coolant
  • Coolant leak on the ground
  • High oil level
  • Milky-looking oil

Causes of Leaking Intake Gaskets

The intake is located in the center of the engine in between the two heads. Coolant passes from one head to the other though the intake. The gasket can leak internally on the 1st gen Tahoe and mix coolant with the oil. The coolant may also leak externally. Coolant leaking into the engine oil can damage the engine. If the oil level is extremely high, it could be because coolant is leaking into the engine.

How to Fix Leaking Intake Gaskets

The upper part of the intake does not need to be removed since it all comes together. Some parts like the A/C compressor and distributor will need to be moved to access the intake. The timing will need to be rechecked afterwards. The bolts at the front and the two bolts at the back need to be removed. Remove the intake and clean the gaskets off and replace them with new ones.

The windshield wiper board is located on the wiper motor under a protective cover. If in an emergency, tap the board or the motor with a hammer to get the wipers temporarily working. If the board has failed, the board needs to be replaced. We recommend replacing the wiper motor at the same time.
