The 1955 Porsche 356 `Silver Bullett`

Back in 1992, Jeff Dutton of Australia was building a fantastically hotrodded Porsche 356 ……errr ……914? Whatever it was, it turned out to be one of the cooler looking Porsches that I have laid my eyes upon.  From what I understand, Jeff’s family was in the coach building business since the early 1900’s, and this is where Jeff honed his skills that were needed to build the “Silver Bullett”.

The Silver Bullett actually began its life as two cars that were only vaguely related, like 2nd cousins.  The first being a Porsche 914, and the second being a rough looking 1955 356 continental coupe.  Some purists weren’t too thrilled about the fact that Jeff cut up a rare ’55 356, but who knows, maybe the 356 was 1 step away from turning to dust?  Pause.  Let’s all step back for a moment, shake it off, and take a deep breath. Ehem.  Ok, moving on… The 914 wheelbase is almost 14 inches longer than that of the 356. This is why the front of the Silver Bullett looks fairly recognizable as a 356, but the back half of the body had to be hand made by Jeff.  On the rear of the car, you will notice a louvered cover where you would expect a rear window to be. Beneath that hides the 3.0L, 280 horsepower engine and a 5-speed transmission. They are surrounded by fresh outside air drawn in through the roof scoop.   As you can imagine, driving a vehicle without a rear window can be a hassle.  Jeff’s solution was to cut a hole in the roof and passenger side door (take that purists!), add some scoops, and stuff a mirror inside each one.  Viola!  Rearward vision again!

The interior is functional and industrial with it’s aluminum door panels and floor pans, the no-frills seats, roll cage, manual windows, and fire extinguisher….. just in case.  There is 10 inches of windshield to look at the world ahead, and a tachometer big enough to make you wonder exactly who decided that the 4 inch tach wasn’t big enough.   The minimalist interior is something I have always loved and the Silver Bullett does it just right.  In fact it does nearly everything just right.  The only thing it is missing is a set of turbos hanging off that air cooled 6.  That would be the icing on the cake.

GREAT NEWS!  It can all be yours for the small, 1 time fee of just $135,000.  Open up your wallets folks!

  1. Hi Jeremy,
We’re not building anything at the moment but we have a couple of ideas in mind.
Just need the time and the spare cash, these projects can chew up the dollars.
    They are however, very rewarding.
    Regards Jeff

    1. I can only imagine the amount of time and money that goes into a project like that. So, after building some amazing cars already, do you have a “dream” car that is somewhere in the back of your head? What’s the one car that you are itching to get your hands on? 🙂
