Causes of EVAP System Problems
- Gas cap triggered the check engine light
- The purge solenoid commonly breaks on the 96-04 Nissan Pathfinder. It opens and gives the EVAP system vacuum. Normally it is closed and when it receives electric power and ground it opens the valve. Sometimes the valve is stuck open or stuck closed, or it leaks.
- The EVAP canister at the rear of the vehicle can crack and leak

Check the Gas Cap
Replace the gas cap for any of the following defects
- Pull the gas cap straight back before twisting to check for looseness
- Check the gasket on the gas cap for tearing or breaking
