GMC Envoy Problems - GMC Envoy

Common 2nd Gen GMC Envoy problems include issues starting, intermittent electrical problems, and a defective thermostat. Every vehicle has its common faults, and these are the 5 most common problems owners have found for the 2nd generation GMC Envoy, years 2002 to 2009.

Top 5 GMC Envoy Common Problems

Top 5 Issues on the 2nd Generation GMC Envoy (2002 to 2009)

1. Thermostat Issues

Symptoms of a Bad Thermostat

  • Check engine light for code P0128
  • Heat is not as hot as usual

Causes of a Bad Thermostat

The computer monitors engine temperature. If it does not reach the expected temperature, the check engine light will come on.

The thermostat tends to stick open on these vehicles and if the heat is not blowing as hot, it could be from a stuck open thermostat that is letting coolant enter the radiator.

How to Fix a Bad Thermostat

The thermostat is hard to reach and is located underneath the alternator. Replace the thermostat housing since it is all one unit on these vehicles.

2. Camshaft Actuator Solenoid Valve

Symptoms of a Bad Camshaft Actuator Solenoid Valve

  • Check engine light for code P0014 or P1345
  • Engine is running rough

How to Fix a Bad Camshaft Actuator Solenoid Valve

Before ordering a new camshaft actuator valve and replacing it, first remove the valve and inspect it for metal debris. If there is excessive metal on the valve, there is other internal engine damage that needs to be addressed. If it generally looks clean with only a little bit of build-up on it, then replacing the valve is usually enough to fix it.

After replacing the valve, we recommend changing your oil—changing the oil regularly is good preventative maintenance for the valves.

3. Steering Wheel Position Sensor

Symptoms of a Bad Steering Wheel Position Sensor

  • Check engine light for code C0455
  • Different warning lights

Causes of a Bad Steering Wheel Position Sensor

A defective wheel position sensor has to do with the angle of the steering wheel position. There may be an electrical circuit issue, but usually it’s the sensor.

The code will be stored in the brake control module (BCM). You may see a check engine light or traction control light.

How to Fix a Bad Steering Wheel Position Sensor

The sensor is located at the base of the steering column. The repair requires removing one of the lower panels and you may have to remove the steering column depending on how the brackets are placed.

4. Ignition Switch

Symptoms of a Faulty Ignition Switch

  • Vehicle stalls while driving
  • Vehicle won’t start
  • Electrical problems like lights functioning intermittently

How to Fix the Ignition Switch

The ignition switch is located in the steering column. It requires removing the lower steering column panel, disconnecting the electrical connector, and removing it.

5. Front Hub Bearings

Symptoms of Bad Front Hub Bearings

  • Groaning sound coming from the front of the vehicle while driving
  • Groaning sound from the wheels that changes in volume when turning

How to Inspect Bad Front Hub Bearings

Raise the vehicle with a jack and jack stands. Grab the tire at the 12 and 6 o’clock position and shake it in and out. If there is significant play, the vehicle likely needs a new hub bearing.
