Top 5 Issues on the 3rd Generation Hyundai Santa Fe (2013 to 2018)

1. Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure

Symptoms of Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure

Starting problems:

  • Random engine stalling
  • Santa Fe will crank but won’t start

How to Fix a Bad Crankshaft Position Sensor

Located behind the engine, the crankshaft position sensor reads where the engine is positioned so the computer knows when to add fuel and spark for combustion. If the crankshaft position sensor is defective, replace it.

2. Turbo Boost Control Actuator Failure

Symptoms of a Bad Turbo Boost Control Actuator

  • Lack of engine power
  • Poor acceleration
  • Check engine light with a code P2562

How to Fix a Turbo Boost Control Actuator

Replace the actuator. There’s a rod on the turbo with an actuator connected to it that goes to where the wastegate would be. With the actuator off, check if the rod for the turbo charger moves. If the rod can’t move, chances are it’s frozen on the turbo charger and needs to be replaced.

3. Back Up Camera Problems

The back up camera is located on the rear lift gate. Usually replacing the back up camera fixes this issue.

4. Front Hub Bearing Assembly Failure

Symptoms of Bad Front Wheel Bearings

Sometimes the bearing assemblies loosen and may emit a loud grinding noise. The pitch may change when turning.

Causes of Front Wheel Bearing Problems on the 2013 to 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe

Wheel bearings wear out from use. Grinding and high pitch sounds from the wheel when turning are usually from worn wheel bearings on the 3rd gen Santa Fe.

How to Test Bad Front Wheel Bearings

Grabbing a tire from the 12 and 6 o'clock positions to test the wheel bearing

Grab the top of the bottom of the wheel and shake it. Significant play in the wheel means the hub bearing assembly is worn and needs to be replaced.

5. Knock Sensor Failure

Symptoms of a Bad Knock Sensor

  • No drivability issues but a check engine light for code P0326

How to Fix a Knock Sensor

Try clearing the code with a scan tool. Most likely the knock sensor needs to be replaced.

  1. Good day

I have a 2017 Santa Fa Sport 2.0 SUV. 134,000 well maintained and service. Have problems now with the following.

    Front wheel bearings

Just finished repairing a device in the crank shaft that dealt with performance. Acceleration. That cost me 2,400.00. Now the above bearings $800.00

Have had 3 Hyundai vehicles before so not impressed and probably will be the end of this brand for me.

    What’s your opinion.

    Thanks

    Albert
