In this post and video, we review the top 4 most common problems with the Volkswagen (VW) 2.5 liter engine. The VW 2.5 5-cylinder engine we review is in a 5th generation 2005 to 2010 Volkswagen Jetta.
The Top 4 Most Common VW 2.5 Liter Engine Problems
1. Timing Chains Failing
Symptoms of Problems with the Timing Chain on the VW 2.5 Liter Engine
- Rattling noise at the backside of the engine
- Check engine light
Causes of Problems with the Timing Chain
There won’t be much of a warning before the timing chain starts to fail. You may hear a rattling noise from the backside of the engine and the check engine light might turn on. If there’s a problem with the timing chains on the VW 2.5 liter engine, you’ll need to fix it right away.
How to Fix Timing Chain Issues
The timing chain is located at the driver side, backside of the engine. We recommend replacing the timing chains on vehicles with high mileage if they haven’t been serviced. Replacing the timing chains is a detailed job that requires special tools and the removal of a lot of car parts.
2. Valve Cover Failure
Symptoms of Problems with the Valve Cover
- Oil leaks near the ignition coils
- Engine misfires
Causes of a Bad Valve Cover
If the valve cover gasket is leaking oil, it can be found near the ignition coils. This could cause an engine misfire. The PCV system is related to the valve cover, and if that fails, a vacuum leak can also cause a misfire.
How to Fix Valve Cover Failure
If there’s an oil leak on the ignition coils, you may have to replace the valve cover gasket and the valve cover.
3. Oil Leaks
Symptoms of Oil Leaks on the VW 2.5 Liter Engine
- Valve cover leaking oil
- Oil pan leaking oil
Causes of Oil Leaks
The oil pan gasket can fail and the oil pan can rust and leak oil.
How to Fix Oil Leaks
If the oil pan gasket is bad and leaking oil, you’ll need to remove the oil pan, remove the gasket and replace it and then reinstall the oil pan. If the oil pan is rusted, consider replacing it.
4. Oil Pump
Symptoms of Problems with the Oil Pump on the VW 2.5 Liter Engine
- Low oil pressure light is on
Causes of Oil Pump Failure
A clogged oil pump screen or bad oil pump can turn the low oil pressure light on.
How to Fix a Bad Oil Pump
The oil pump is underneath the oil pan. If you’re working on the oil pan, with the pan removed, check the oil pump screen and see if it’s plugged. We recommend changing or cleaning the screen as soon as possible if the 2.5 liter engine has this problem. To prevent this problem, we recommend changing the oil more often.
