Top 5 Problems with the 3rd Gen Lexus RX 350 (2010 to 2015)
1. Oil Leaks
Symptoms of Oil Leaks
- Major oil spill underneath the car
- Engine light and oil light comes on at the same time
Causes of Oil Leaks on the 3rd Gen RX 350
The 3.5 L engine is known to leak. The oil line that travels from the VVT solenoid to the oil feed may break, and the updated replacement is known to have the same problem.
How to Fix Oil Leak Problems
If you notice a large oil spill underneath the SUV or the engine light and oil light turn on at the same time, stop driving immediately to save the engine. All of the oil will drain, and oil is needed for the engine to work.
The vehicle will need to be towed and have the lines replaced. The repair is a detailed job, and there are no aftermarket replacements—the oil lines are only available from Lexus or Toyota. Replace the line to save the engine.
2. AC Does Not Blow Cold Air
Symptoms of the AC Not Working
- The AC is not blowing cold air
Causes of AC Not Working
A problem with the AC amplifier tends to cause AC problems on the 3rd gen RX 350.
How to Fix the AC Not Working
You might check the AC compressor connector with a test light or voltmeter for voltage and find there is none, and you may also check the schematics for a ground but you don’t find one.
Check the AC amplifier, which is behind the glove box. Remove the glove box and find it above the cabin air filter box. It’s a black box with electrical wires, and you might pull body code B1475 with an advanced scanner.
Toyota and Lexus are aware of the problem and you may need to have the dealership fix this problem.
3. Liftgate Not Working
Symptoms of Liftgate Problems
- When you press the key fob, the liftgate may open on command but it may not close, or it may lock but won’t open until the button on the liftgate is pressed
Causes of Liftgate Problems on the 2010 to 2015 Lexus RX 350
Lexus says “initialization” is needed, which means the RX 350 needs to be reprogrammed.
This problem may happen after disconnecting the battery, and it can cause electrical problems with parts other than the liftgate, like the window or sunroof.
How to Fix Liftgate Problems
Search online and find out how to reprogram it. All you will need to do is follow the instructions in the driver’s seat with the key.
4. Software Update
Symptoms of a Needed Software Update
- Radio or GPS is working intermittently
How to Fix Software Problems
Get the latest software update by installing it to a USB drive. Insert the USB drive into the USB port and follow the instructions.
5. O2 Sensor Codes P0137 and P0138
Symptoms of Oxygen (O2) Sensor Codes
- Check engine light for codes P0137 and P0138
Causes of O2 Sensor Codes
Toyota and Lexus’ “upstream” O2 sensors are called air-fuel ratio sensors, which may fail and turn on the check engine light. Their “downstream” O2 have a heater sensor inside that tends to fail.
How to Fix O2 Sensor Codes
You will need to change these sensors with an original equipment (OE)-spec replacement. A universal oxygen sensor won’t fix this problem.
Replace the sensor with a quality one intended to work in the system. They can have wiring issues, so if the code returns after the sensor is replaced, consider getting outside help from a professional.
