A 1st gen Volkswagen Passat with problems like ignition coils and ABS modules failing is actually more common than unexpected. While there is nothing particularly wrong with the VW Passat, we review the top 5 problems with the 1st generation, years 2012 to 2019.
1st Gen 2012 to 2019 Volkswagen Passat Problems
1. ABS Module Failure
Symptoms of ABS Module Failure
- Less effective braking
- ABS light on on dash
- Traction light on dash possibly on
Causes of ABS Module Problems on the 2012 to 2019 VW Passat
Problems with the ABS module is a safety concern. The ABS is designed to keep the brakes from slipping and to provide solid, stable braking in tough driving conditions. If there is an issue with the ABS module, the car won’t consistently brake well. This is definitely a problem if you’re on a road with a slippery surface for example. You could also see an ABS light appear on the dash if there’s an issue with a part in the system.
How to Fix ABS Module Failure
You’ll typically find the ABS control module underneath the hood. If the ABS module is causing these problems, replace it.
2. Odor from HVAC System
Symptoms of Odor from HVAC System
- Odor when the heat or air conditioning is turned on
Causes of Odor Problems with the HVAC System in the 2012 to 2019 Volkswagen Passat
The heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, can build up condensation near the heater core box. This can create an odor when the heat or a/c is turned on. The condensation should exit from a drain in the system leading from underneath the car, but these can clog. As the moisture sits in the system, bacteria can grow and smell, creating an odor.
How to Fix Odor from HVAC System
Make sure condensation isn’t building near the heater box. Check the hose underneath the car that’s responsible for draining the moisture. Blow air up inside it to see if it’s clogged. Air should be able to travel freely. You may see debris fall out of the hose, and that’s a sign the hose is unclogging and it might clear the clog completely.
You can also add an odor eliminator to remove the odor. Spray it into the vents along the dash and other suitable places like the cabin air filter.

3. Engine Misfire
Symptoms of Engine Misfire
- P0300 code
- P0301 to P0306 code
- P2150 code
- Engine shaking
Causes of Engine Misfire
The engine can feel rough and not running like it normally does, and a check engine light can turn on for code P0300, or a P301 to P0306 code that indicates a specific cylinder. A P2150 code might also appear with these, and there is a technical service bulletin from Volkswagen covering this issue that if you get a misfire code and code P2150, which is a code for low fuel level, the low fuel level is causing the misfire.
How to Fix Engine Misfire
If you get a misfire code for a specific cylinder, swap the ignition coil and the spark plug with ones from another cylinder. If the misfire code reads for the cylinder you swapped the coil and spark plug to, you know you have a problem with the spark plug or coil.
Replace the ignition coil if it’s defective, and replace the spark plug at the same time.
If you also read for code P2150 with a misfire code, a low fuel level is causing the misfire. Add more gas to the fuel tank, clear the code, and road test the car.
4. Poor Visibility
Symptoms of Poor Visibility
- Tough blind spots
- Can be hard to see certain angles when driving
Causes of Tough Visibility
The mirrors are small on the 1st gen Volkswagen Passat and it can be difficult to see at times, like when looking for corners while backing up.
How to Fix Poor Visibility
If you’d like to see more of the rear, install a larger rear view mirror.
Consider adding mirror attachments to the side view mirrors for a larger view.
Consider installing a backup camera for a better view when driving in reverse.
5. Message Center Error
Symptoms of Message Center Error
- Dash cluster says there’s a bulb out of place but the bulbs work
- Radio system lock out
Causes of Message Center Error
The radio system might not work. It might lock you out and prevent you from using the stereo. The dash cluster might also read for a bulb that’s out but after diagnosing, the bulbs all will be working. This is due to a software glitch that Volkswagen has developed a fix for.
How to Fix Message Center Error
This problem can be fixed with a software update from Volkswagen.
