RX7 Under Construction Pic.

Not much going on here.  Just a friend’s single turbo swapped 93 RX7 in the process of getting a new pilot bearing.  It should be back on the road soon enough though. Oh, and it makes close to 400 horsepower, which is also nice.  I think once it is back together I will get some good pictures of it, and show off just how awesome/ahead of their time the 3rd Gen RX7’s are.

Whoa: Have You Seen Nelson Racing Engines?

Imagine you are a multi-millionaire driving to work in your luxurious ’91 Chevrolet Caprice (hey, it could happen).  Gas is cheap, the sun is shining, brightly colored flowers are swaying, ducks are quacking, and life sure is good.  With the windows wide open and the radio cranked, you do your best to harmonize with Mariah Carey because nobody else is around to judge you.  You are sure that today is going to be an absolutely wonderful day.  Mariah and yourself are just about to hit the pinnacle of “We belong together”, when your Caprice violently puke’s its connecting rod through the side of the engine block.  Ca-Blooey!  Rap Rap Ca-Pow!  Thud….  Mariah will have to finish this one without you.

Silence has surrounded you as you woefully roll to the side of the road.  The sun, flowers, and ducks have all vanished as well.  Could your engine have really been trying to escape your singing?  Ouch. While you can’t be sure about your engine’s motives, you can be sure that your smooth sailing, sweet B-body needs a new power plant. What a bummer…  Or is it? Read More

Exclusive Motoring: The 1983 Volvo 240 Turbo Commercial.

Volvo 240 Turbo

In the early 1980’s quite a few manufacturers wanted to get into the rally racing game, and Volvo was one of them.  Naturally they needed to produce a car that had some kind of chance of fitting into that scene.  So, they came out with a turbocharged 240 that made just a tick over 150 horsepower and about 175 ft lbs of torque.  This was sort of the “base” for the special edition racing versions that would come out shortly after with double the horsepower and torque. UPDATE: AWD Mitsubishi Turbo Dune Buggy!

Back in August we had and entire week of amazing automotive projects, and many readers asked for updates as they progressed. Since 1A Auto never disappoints, and Don never stops working on this thing, we bring you Round 2 of the AWD Mitsubishi Turbo Dune Buggy (See Round 1 Here if you missed it).  Since the first 1A Auto blog post, I have gotten to know Don a bit, and he is one of the most creative and resourceful builders I have seen.  There are not enough thumbs on my hands to give him the amount of “thumbs up” that he deserves!  Keep up the great work!

As you can see:

– Many many hours of fiberglass work has been done
– Body mounts have been made
– Front bumper installed
– Strut braces have been made
– Radiator and mounted
– New tires and wheels!

Monday = AWD Mitsubishi Turbo Dune Buggy

It’s no secret that I love cars with forced induction & all wheel drive.  There is also a wacky rumor floating around that I may have a secret obsession with air cooled VW’s.  Well, when you mix that dream with reality, you find yourself on the internet staring into the bug eyes of an incredibly scary Eagle Talon Dune Buggy.  It is the brainchild of a guy appropriately named “dsmbuggy” on baystatedsm.com.

He took a drivable, but rough looking AWD Talon, cut the body off and ever so gently applied a dune-buggy body to it.  He then added a few roll bars to complete the package and reserve his spot in dune buggy legends.  Is it going to horrify nearby children & pets?  You bet it is.  Will it ever be able to pass a state inspection?  “Who’s Asking?” ….   Read More
