The Acura RDX’s first model year began in 2007 and it’s lasted for 3 generations. Known as a luxury SUV, the RDX has its own common issues it has been known to run into. This post covers the 3rd generation, years 2019 to 2021, of our Acura RDX problems series.
Top 5 Acura RDX Problems: 3rd Generation (2019 to 2021)
1. Windshield/Sunroof Problems
Symptoms of Problems with the Windshield or Sunroof on the 2019 to 2021 Acura RDX
- Creaking or popping sound where the windshield connects to the roof
- Creaking or clunking noises from the sunroof when driving over unpaved roads
Causes of Problems with the Windshield or Sunroof
If the creaking or popping sound from where the windshield is connected to the roof happens for too long, it could eventually break the windshield.
The 3rd gen RDX also has a panoramic sunroof that expands from the front of the SUV to the rear. This affects the weight of the vehicle, so it’s possible to hear creaking or clunking noises when driving on bumpy roads. In an extreme case, the sunroof could break or fail to work properly.
How to Fix Problems with the Windshield or Sunroof
Have a professional who specializes in these areas to inspect the vehicle.
2. CMBS Problems
Symptoms of Problems with the CMBS on the 3rd Gen Acura RDX
- Vehicle comes to an unwarranted stop
Causes of CMBS Issues
The collision mitigating braking system (CMBS) has a radar sensor behind the grille and along the windshield and a camera. These parts of the system work together when driving. The radar will let you know if you’re too close to objects in front of you or it will illuminate a warning on the dash. This can cause instances like the seat belt pulling tight and hitting the brakes.
The sensor of the CMBS system can fail and bring the RDX to a stop.
How to Fix Issues with the CMBS
Have a professional who specializes in this area inspect the vehicle.
3. Problems with Limp Mode
Symptoms of Problems with Limp Mode on the 2019 to 2021 Acura RDX
- Mph decreases
- RDX has less power than usual
- Check engine light flashing
- Loss of power to systems like the AC or infotainment center
Causes of Limp Mode Engaging
You may be driving down the highway, for example, and notice the RDX’s power and miles per hour (mph) decreasing.
If the vehicle’s onboard computer found a problem with one of the RDX’s main components like the transmission or engine, it will cut power to the engine and engage in “limp mode” to get you off the road and to a mechanic safely.
Typically, problems with the transmission are known to engage limp mode.
How to Fix Limp Mode
Bring the vehicle to a mechanic and have them inspect it further.
4. Apple CarPlay Connectivity Problems
Symptoms of Problems with the Apple CarPlay Connectivity
- Apple CarPlay does not recognize devices
Causes of Apple CarPlay Not Working in the 2019 to 2021 Acura RDX
The Apple CarPlay is on the infotainment center as a tab at the bottom right corner, but sometimes nothing happens after a device like an iPhone is plugged in. This could be from a problem with the cord or the program.
How to Fix Apple CarPlay Connectivity
Check the cable connected to your device for any issues that may cause a problem with the connection. If the problem still persists despite using different cables, check the infotainment for system updates. Update the system if needed.
If this problem still persists, bring the RDX to an Acura dealership.
5. Key Fob Failure
Symptoms of Key Fob Not Working
- Key fob won’t open the door
Causes of the Key Fob Failing
You may find replacing the key fob battery still doesn’t fix problems with the key fob not opening the door. The vehicle may need to be reprogrammed to get the key fob working.
How to Fix a Key Fob Not Opening the RDX Doors
Replace the key fob battery or bring the RDX to an Acura dealership.
