Sometimes a heat shield rattle can be heard on many vehicles’ exhaust manifold and exhaust components. If you hear a rattling from a loose heat shield, this article and video has a simple method for how to fix a heat shield with a hose clamp, which should work on many different makes and models and fix this problem for a long time.
How to Fix a Heat Shield Rattle with a Hose Clamp
Sometimes the headshield can loosen and separate, causing a rattling noise.
This simple method does not require the heat shield to be removed. Removing the heat shield can cause issues with wiring, sensors, and rubber components located nearby.
Steps for Fixing a Heat Shield Rattle
- Loosen a Screw Hose Clamp
Loosen a screw hose clamp completely until it separates.
- Wrap the Hose Clamp Around the Heat Shield and Exhaust Component
With the engine cold, wrap a hose clamp, the one in this example is about 3 and a half inches, around the exhaust component and heat shield.
- Tighten the Hose Clamp to Clamp the Heat Shield in Place
Tighten the hose clamp with a flat blade screwdriver until the broken piece of heat shield is clamped into place, in this case to the exhaust manifold. This should keep the heat shield on nice and tight.
Tightening the heat shield with an additional 2-3 hose clamps may give more security, but at least one tight quality hose clamp should solve this problem for a long time. - Feel How Tight the Heat Shield Is
Tap the heatshield to get a feel for how tight it is.
