Move In Day At NHMS;Louden NH

It’s Thursday ! What’s so great about Thursday? Well… if you’re a race fan it’s official “Move In” day at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The excitement begins tonight at 5:00 with the race hauler parade. What’s the race hauler parade do you ask? That’s when all of the cool 18 wheelers line up and parade around the track so that the fans can get a good look at these things. If you have ever seen one of these truck blow by you on the interstate,they’re pretty awesome to look at. They are always super clean and painted up like your favorite drivers stock car.

Joey Logano will also be available tonight to sign autographs for the fans at the track. Logano’s first win was at NHMS in 2009 making him the youngest driver to have won a Sprint Cup Race.

With Kentucky behind us I’ll be heading up to NHMS on Friday night. The RV’s already parked in it’s place courtesy of some great friends just waiting for the race weekend festivities to begin.

If you’re heading up to Louden before the weekend be sure to take in the K&N series race on Friday. Andrew Ranger driver of the Waste Management car has been lighting that series on fire. The kid can pretty much drive anything you put him in.

On Saturday for $40.00 you can catch the Modified race which is one of the best races of the weekend. Ryan Newman usually drives in the event, and after that the Nationwide race runs. So you can catch both of these races for very little money and it’s a great fun filled afternoon.

The Sprint Cup Series is set to run on Sunday. Guys to pick for your fantasy league are Clint Bowyer, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart and David Reutimann all typically run very well at this track.

I’ve had seats on the start/finish line for 10 years now and have witnessed Tony Stewart climb the huge catch fence right in front of us, it was a pretty cool sight to see.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. absolutely loves this track and even if he has had a bad season he usually runs well here. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the 88 in victory lane on Sunday.

One of the coolest things about winning at Louden on Sunday is the victory ” lobsta” that these guys always receive. I have no idea where they catch these things but they’re always huge.

I can’t speak for everybody, but I know that I love build threads.  When I read about what other people are working on, breaking, and racing, I get all amp’ed up and ready to weld the nearest object to me.  Watching a vehicle go from a total rust bucket to a weekend driver or show car is inspiring and often gives me the motivation I need to work on my own junky projects.  Just last weekend I read 192 pages of a build thread on The Samba about a 1938 VW beetle found in Lithuania. It literally took me a few hours to read, and it was quite possibly the most impressive forum thread I have ever witnessed.  When I was done reading it, I wanted to give somebody, anybody a round of applause.  My cat Malibu pranced into the room and was excitedly cheered on by me.  She assumed that she had won a major award, but really I was just in awe over the fantastic fabrication skills on the ’38 Beetle.  Bottom line is, when it comes to nice metal, I’m excitable. Remember that E30 BMW We Talked About? It’s Faster Now.

Back in February, we introduced you to Matt A. and his E30 BMW. Under his hood was a Mitsu Eclipse 4G63 turbo engine swap, along with a 6-speed manual transmission, and a turbo that could swallow a goose whole and not even surge.  Last year, Matt’s BMW was making a mere 500-ish horsepower and running low 11’s in the quarter mile at 119 mph.  So, it was basically too slow, because Matt wanted 9’s.  Fair enough.

It’s now July 2011, and racing season is in full swing again.  On July 9th Matt took his BMW up to New England Dragway for his first real testing day this season. Right off that bat, Matt tore off a 1.586 second 60 foot time, and ran 10.538 at 132 mph. Cutting a half a second off your 1320 time, along with gaining 13 mph is not too shabby I’d say.

You are probably saying “Great, but he still didn’t do 9’s yet, so what?”  Well, you see Matt has around 100 more horsepower on tap, ready to be “turned on” per se.  He is just on the fence about cranking it up and grabbing 9’s in the weeks ahead, OR saving his fresh drivetrain for the 19th Annual DSM shootout in Ohio on August 20th and 21st.  Regardless of when it happens, 9’s are going to happen, and you will see the video here when it does.

This Is A Mandatory Item For Every Car Enthusiast

Bolt drawer, bolt bucket, or junk drawer.  No matter what you call it, it is absolutely imperative that every automotive enthusiast has one of these within reach.  If you don’t, you are basically setting yourself up for heartache & pain.  This particular drawer in my tool box has saved me approximately 470 gallons of gas, several hospital trips, 1 million hours of work, and unimaginable amounts of cash.  Over the last 15 years, it has been cleaned and organized many times, but in the end it always ends up looking like this.  Though I can’t confirm whether it is a good or a bad thing, it is quite possibly the most used drawer in my tool box.   Read More

Kyle Busch Win’s In Kentucky

When you’re good you’re good. Kyle Busch won the Camping World Truck series in Kentucky on Thursday night and also won the inaugural Sprint Cup Race at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday.

For it’s first Sprint Cup race, the Quaker State 400 was a SOLD OUT show! It was so packed with race fans  reports estimated that possibly around 10,000-20,000 fans may not have been able to make it to the event due to traffic jams anywhere from 3-5 hours long on the interstate. Taking a look at the grandstand on TV I’m not sure where they would even have fit that many more race fans.

It’s seems as though some of the teams that typically run well week after week had trouble setting the car up for this track. Dale Earnhardt Jr. seemed to be having a tough time throughout much of the day. Also teammate Mark Martin wasn’t much of a threat either throughout the day.

However David Reutimann ran very well, so well in fact, that if he had a few laps left he may have well won the darn thing.

Step Into The Future With the 1939 GM Futurliner

This month ebay Motors is celebrating Collector Car Appreciation Month.  Within this celebration is a featured eBay listing for one of the original 1939 GM  Futurliners.  If you aren’t up to par on your Futurliner history, they were basically tour buses that Harley Earl & his crew produced 12 of way back in the 1930’s.  When the Futurliners combined their superpowers on the open road, they became General Motors’ “Parade of Progress”.  This futuristic parade toured the entire United States along with parts of Canada, Mexico and Cuba. Their goal was to show off some of the newest technologies that were going to make the world a better place. Read More
