Diagnose and Fix a Fast Blinker with a New Turn Signal Bulb

If you have a blinker or turn signal blinking fast, there is an easy solution that almost any car owner can do. You may need a screwdriver or ratchet to remove the screws from the tail light or all you may need is a pair of gloves. All you need to do is change the brake light bulb.

Check out the video below around 0:33 to see the comparison of a turn signal flashing fast and a turn sign flashing at a normal rate.

How to Tell a Turn Signal or Blinker is Flashing Fast

A fast blinking blinker is rapid and there will be no working tail light for that side. The hazard lights and brake lights will also not work. This means the brake light bulb needs to be replaced.

A working blinker should tick consistently about every second.

Why Is My Turn Signal Flashing Fast?

The turn signal or blinker is blinking fast because the brake light bulb for that side is burned out. If the brake light bulb is not burned out, there is probably an electrical problem with the indicator stalk switch.

How to Fix the Brake Light Bulb

Steps for Removing and Installing the Brake Light Bulb

  1. Remove the Tail Light

Remove the tail light from the affected side if necessary to access the light bulb sockets. This may require the use of tools

  2. Remove the Brake Light Bulb

Turn the socket counterclockwise and remove the brake light bulb

  3. Install a New Brake Light Bulb

Without touching the glass with your bare hands, press the brake light bulb into the socket and twist the socket clockwise to secure it

  4. Reinstall the Tail Light

Press the tail light into place and tighten its screws

    1. I have a 1999 ford f-150 pickup truck and all blinkers work fine the way they are supposed to work. When I put the left blinker on it blinks the right way but as soon as I put the brakes on the left blinker starts blinking fast. I have tryed new bulbs and the same thing keeps happening. Does anyone have in idea what the problem would be? Please let me know. I have tryed everything I could think of. Thank you in advance.
