Top 5 Common Issues on the 2nd Gen 1996 to 2004 Nissan Pathfinder
1. Distributor Problems
Symptoms of Distributor Problems on the 96-04 Nissan Pathfinder
- Engine cranking but not turning over at start up
- Engine misfiring
- Rough running engine
Causes of a Bad Distributor
The distributor sends spark to the spark plugs via the spark plug wires. Internal parts in the distributor like the coil or cap and rotor can wear out and cause problems with the distributor and starting the engine.
How to Fix a Bad Distributor
You can purchase parts like the coil separately but sometimes it’s easier to replace the distributor.
2. Worn Engine Timing Belt
Causes of a Worn Timing Belt
The timing belt connects the crankshaft sprocket to the upper camshaft sprockets on the engine, and it helps synchronize the valves with the crank. It wears out over time.
How to Fix a Worn Timing Belt
The timing belt wears out over time and should be replaced every 100,000 miles or less depending on the model year. Intervals can be found in the owner’s manual.
3. Worn Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid
Symptoms of a Worn VVT Solenoid
- Check engine light for codes P0011 or P0021
Causes of a Worn VVT Solenoid
If the oil level falls too low or is not changed regularly, the valve will clog up, causing drivability issues
4. EVAP System Problems
Common 2nd Gen Pathfinder EVAP System Problems
- Check engine light for codes P1447 or P1441
- Smell of fumes after stopping and exiting the vehicle
Causes of EVAP System Problems
- Gas cap triggered the check engine light
- The purge solenoid commonly breaks on the 96-04 Nissan Pathfinder. It opens and gives the EVAP system vacuum. Normally it is closed and when it receives electric power and ground it opens the valve. Sometimes the valve is stuck open or stuck closed, or it leaks.
- The EVAP canister at the rear of the vehicle can crack and leak
- Defective vent valve solenoid
- Defective junction
How to Fix Common EVAP System Problems
