How to Defog Your Windows

If the windows are foggy inside your car, this guide and video explains how to defog your windows the right way with tips from our mechanic Andy.

The Best Way to Defog Your Windows

Steps for how to defog your windows

  1. Start the Car

    First, start the vehicle.

  2. Turn on High Heat

Turn the heat dial to the highest setting.

  3. Set the Fan to the Highest Setting

Put the fan dial to the max setting.

  4. Set to Defrost

Press the defrost button, which will have an icon that represents a windshield with arrows representing airflow.

  5. If the Vehicle Doesn’t Switch from Recirculation to Outside Air Automatically, Press the Outside Air Button

Normally the air will get inside the interior from the outside. If the car doesn’t automatically switch from recirculation (button that has a car with a bent arrow inside) to outside air, press the outside air button (button that has a car with an arrow going inside). Air from the outside will travel through the heater core, and will be warm enough to defog your windows.

  6. Turn on the AC If It Works

If the air conditioning is working and has no problems, turn the AC on. Turning the AC on will help defrost the windshield faster, since there is moisture on the interior of the window.

  7. Wait for the Fog to Disappear

After the interior warms up and dries out, the fog should disappear.
